UP HATHERLEY PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

Last month I mentioned that our VAS (speed sign) had been deployed on the Hatherley Road near Heron Close detecting about 4000 vehicles per week exceeding the 30mph limit heading into town. Shortly after writing that we turned the sign around to measure traffic coming in the opposite direction and astonishingly this recorded an even higher figure on 6500 vehicles per week exceeding the speed limit. Something I’m sure the residents of that area will not be surprised about. These large figures and how to react to them is now being discussed with the County Highways team and I’m delighted to say that following my report last month the Police decided to visit this site. They observed a number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit and warned the drivers in question. Hopefully the Police warnings and the reminders from our flashing sign will encourage drivers more to respect the speed limit on this stretch of road in the future.

After last year’s successful community safety events which stressed the advantages of Neighbourhood Watch schemes we are not resting on our laurels and have organised a further event focussing on the new areas in our Parish (but open to all). It is scheduled for 29th May at the Village Hall.

For those who have entered just a reminder that judging for our popular Garden Competition takes place from 8th to 15th June and the prizegiving evening is at Manor by the Lake is on 8th July. All participants are welcome.

A new sound system has now been installed in the Village Hall to go along with the recently acquired projection facilities. A total redecoration will then complete the upgrading project.

Work on the Pocket Park at the junction of Hatherley Road and Wards Road has also now been completed. This was jointly funded by the Parish and Borough Councils and I hope you’ll agree that it has significantly enhanced this area.

Members of our parish council have met with Bill Sargison and Angela Gilbert from the church and are very enthusiastic about the proposed heritage/oral history project. We look forward to supporting the project as the plan unfolds.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tuesday July 2nd 2019 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Cold Pool Lane
